Case Study

A more human welcome

An L&D team needed onboarding materials to help new starters feel welcome in a large, diverse organisation.

The challenge was to explain processes and introduce company information, whilst creating a positive first impression. The brief was to use inclusive and memorable images, without falling back on generic corporate photography or stock illustration.

Onboarding is not just information.
It is a first impression.

We worked with the client to develop a visual style to support the learning content while also giving the onboarding experience its own identity. The result was a tactile world of handmade paper characters, placed in recognisable everyday situations.

The paper world gave the onboarding materials a sense of warmth and personality. It allowed us to represent difference and belonging without relying on literal depictions of individuals, departments or roles.

Our role combined creative direction, learning design and production. We considered how the visual style would support the learner journey: what new starters needed to feel, what they needed to understand, and how the materials could feel friendly without becoming childish.

Working with an artist, we created a series of scenes that could be used across the onboarding experience. The result was a resource that was different from standard corporate learning materials, helping the organisation give new starters a clearer sense of culture and belonging from day one.
