Understanding patient experiences

A healthcare organisation wanted to help people understand the human impact of decisions made during cancer treatment.

They needed a learning resource that would help audiences explore how communication, support and treatment decisions can affect someone’s journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Turning patient testimony into a healthcare learning resource

Working from real patient testimony, we helped develop a fictional patient story that could carry the truth of those accounts without exposing any one individual’s personal experience. The character of Tom gave audiences someone to follow through the cancer care pathway, making a complex subject easier to understand, discuss and learn from.

Our role combined learning design, storytelling and production. We worked with the client to identify the key moments in the journey: where decisions were made, where communication mattered, where support could change the outcome, and where audiences needed to stop and reflect.

The animation was designed to sit alongside a scene-by-scene analysis showing how Tom’s journey might have unfolded differently. This gave audiences a structured way to discuss patient-centred care and decision-making in practice.

The result was a healthcare learning resource that turned real testimony into something useful: a way to explore how care is experienced by the patient, and how better communication and support can make a difference.
